Whatafuck – “Stronger than God” – REV

Whatafuck is an Italian One Man Band project that took me back more than twenty years. His music is strongly influenced by the bands that in the 90s and early 2000s dictated the law on the heavy music record market, so we could talk about groove metal, alternative metal and hardcore. All genres that can be found in the tracklist of their new album entitled “Stronger Than God”. The vocal approach is cool too and brings to mind some singers who knew how to keep fans in their grip with their angry screams and stinging lyrics.

Here, this is the approach that Whatafuck takes for the duration of the album. Of course we are not talking about a record that is always and only “muscular”, but in general it seems that Whatafuck is particularly at ease in bringing powerful riffs to the plate, pounded drums and a lot, a lot of anger. From time to time the voice lets itself go to something vaguely melodic, and therefore for this alternation between dirty and clean we always return to the footsteps of certain nu-metal. On the other hand, singers like Corey Taylor or Phil Anselmo did this long before Whatafuck (the second also with the seminals sludgers Down), but it’s nice to see that this musician tries to treasure the best of what has been offered to us in the past, when we first talked about crossover, then about groove metal, and then again about nu metal.

All these genres, however, are the evolution of each other for sure, but in essence they all have the same ingredients. And it is these ingredients that Whatafuck feeds on to pour on us an album like this “Stronger than God”, which bodes well for the future. For now I feel like saying that this is a more than decent record, so I expect even better from him in the future!
