Demoghilas – “Antagonist”
Demoghilas seems to live in a world of his own and this can be seen from the artwork of his works. Almost always you see him, the multi-instrumentalist Alfred Zilla, disguised as a bad man, with several costume changes, a sort of “Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde”, where precisely as a musician we have his “bad” part. We often see references to revenge in his lyrics, to a sort of revenge towards a hostile and very dishonest world. Entering the purely musical sphere, Alfred Zilla is certainly a boy who needs the creature Demoghilas, and his personal imprint can be heard throughout the album, which seems suffering and more punkish than usual.
The creative vein of “Antagonist” is a bit simple and too direct and the pieces that are most penalized are those where you try to create some kind of quieter and more reflective moments, and here the voice should be revised for a moment. There is nothing to complain about, however, when Alfred throws himself into what he probably does best, that is, alternative rock/metal which draws heavily from the Nineties of the genre, also from all the experimental and electronic current that emerges on several occasions.
In general “Antagonist” is a good album, but it is a bit penalized by an impersonal voice and an overly homemade recording. Having said that, Demoghilas has our full support, because in these ten songs he always manages to come up with some twist or some surprising guitar riff. He should just take more care of his music and make it less “underground”, and then he could really demonstrate that he is a musician to follow carefully.
